Fearfully, Wonderfully

I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well. (Psalms 139:14)

While the myth of Evolution is still popular with secular humanists in the culture, and even in some universities, Darwin’s theory as it has been popularly understood has been falling out of favor with serious scientists for quite some time. The more we discover about the complexities of the cell, the more ridiculous it is to believe that it could have come about by the undirected, random processes of natural selection. We now know that the DNA molecule, which is in every one of the one-hundred-trillion cells in the human body, is an information repository containing 3.1 billion bits of information, made up of a four-letter chemical alphabet. This enormous digital code contains the information which tells the cell how to link amino acids together to form the proteins which in turn make up the various systems and structures of the human body.

The odds of even a simple protein molecule forming by chance (and we’re talking about the most basic of proteins), would be 1 in 10125. To give some perspective on how large a number that is, and thus how remote the probability, if one were to count all the subatomic particles that make up all the matter in all the known universe (that’s protons, electrons, etc.), it would only come to about 1081. Assuming the universe is, as scientists tell us, about 15 billion years old, that comes out to only 1017 seconds. In other words, with the time we have on the cosmic calendar from the Big Bang to now, there would not be enough time for even the simplest of proteins to form by chance, much less the extremely complex systems in the human body. In short, we are NOT the product of matter plus chance plus time. It is becoming more and more apparent that life was designed, and to have design, one must have a Designer.

This is still not accepted by materialists or Darwinian naturalists. After all, when have scientists ever allowed facts to get in the way of their pursuit of evidence that eliminates the need for a Creator? But even scientists are finding their old arguments simply don’t explain the complexity we see in life. Recently in England, there was a conference in which the leading origin of life scientists met to discuss the need for a new theory of that could address these issues. In recent years, a number of leading scientists have even come to faith due to these discoveries. Most notable among them was philosopher Anthony Flew, who first converted to theism and then to definite faith before his death. Before Richard Dawkins burst onto the scene, Flew was probably the most noted atheist. His conversion did not come through a religious experience but from the evidence of science itself. He said:

“There were two factors in particular that were decisive.  One was my growing empathy with the insight of Einstein and other noted scientists that there had to be an Intelligence behind the integrated complexity of the physical Universe. The second was my own insight that the integrated complexity of life itself – which is far more complex than the physical Universe – can only be explained in terms of an Intelligent Source. I believe that the origin of life and reproduction simply cannot be explained from a biological standpoint despite numerous efforts to do so.  With every passing year, the more that was discovered about the richness and inherent intelligence of life, the less it seemed likely that a chemical soup could magically generate the genetic code.”[1]

Another noted scientist who was once a committed materialist and became a believer in Christ through the evidence of science, is Dean Kenyon, Professor Emeritus of Biology at San Francisco State University. Having written extensively on origin of life issues previously in favor of the Darwinian model, he later refuted the claims of his own book. He has said:

“It is my conviction that if any professional biologist will take adequate time to examine carefully the assumptions upon which the macro-evolution doctrine rests, and the observational and laboratory evidence that bears on the problem of origins, he/she will conclude that there are substantial reasons for doubting the truth of this doctrine. Moreover, I believe that a scientifically sound creationist view of origins is not only possible, but it is to be preferred over the evolutionary one.”[2]

While their terminology may be more technical, these noted scientists are simply agreeing with the Psalmist in saying that we are indeed “fearfully and wonderfully made.” It is amazing to me to sometimes hear people in popular culture refer to Darwin’s theory of Evolution as being responsible for the origin of life when even Nobel prize winning scientists, such as Sir Francis Crick, have flatly denied that possibility. The fact is that many atheists hang on to the tattered shreds of Darwin in the same way some craze-cracked individuals hang onto the idea that the earth is flat (yes, there really are some still out there!). More than that, they hang on to Darwin with a religious zeal, for it this materialistic worldview that allows them to deny the Creator and avoid moral accountability to Him. And yet, God has given them clear witness of Himself. In fact, He has given it in every one of the one-hundred-trillion cells in their own bodies. Indeed, as Flew suggested in His comments, He has written it in the very nature of the universe.

The apostle Paul wrote, “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). For a long time, scientists have marveled at the tremendous precision built into the universe. The fundamental forces of the universe are fine-tuned to such an incredibly narrow set of parameters as to deny all possibility of mere chance. If any one of these forces were altered by even the slightest margin, life in our universe would not be possible.

So, from the microscopic to the vastness of the universe, we have the fingerprints of God on His creation. More to the point, God made all this for us. While we may not be in the physical center of the universe as was once believed, we now know that everything from our position in our own solar system to the very size and distance of our moon from the earth makes life possible on this planet. The evidence has become so insurmountable that even skeptics in the scientific community are having to admit that our seemingly insignificant planet is special. In fact, it is most likely completely unique.

Most important to me and you, however, is the fact that it was on this planet, two-thousand years ago, the Son of God died to pay the penalty for our sins. It is that, more than our position in the cosmos, which makes us special. You were not merely born. You were designed, and best of all, you were designed for Him and His purposes. You are not the product of random chance but divine design. That means that you were planned, purposed, and intended. You have value because God made you on purpose, and you will discover the ultimate value for your life when you discover the purpose for which He made you.
